Six trainees started their full time traineeships in Conservation and Land Management at Raukkan (check out the back of your $50 note) near Narrung this week (31/01/12) as part of the Raukkan Aboriginal Learning on Country (ALoC) Project.
Indigenous Traineeships in SA Riverland

Six Indigenous participants took part in preparatory training at the Kungun Aboriginal Community Centre through Heta’s Indigenous Employment Program (IEP). During the two weeks course from 16 to 27 January 2012, the participants received assistance with their resumes, learned interview techniques, and were given recommendations regarding the best learning pathway towards gaining their Certificates at TAFE SA.

As a result, four of the participants have gained traineeships with the Aboriginal Lands Trust and SA Murrya-Darling and National Resource Management Board that starts on 31/01/2012. Four trainees will be studying towards their Certificate III Indigenous Land Management and ‘Working on Country’ around the region. They will undertake feral control, weed management, vegetation management, observation management, seed collection as part of their training over the next 12 months.

As Heta’s IEP Trainer Mick said “placements in their own community have more relevance to these young people. The project aims to have more Indigenous Rangers on the land explaining their history and their culture, as they take ownership of their land and become role models in their community”.

This project is a part of the Aboriginal Learning on Country (ALoC) Program. Key stakeholders include SA Murray-Darling Basin NRM Board (SA MDB NRM Board), Aboriginal Lands Trust (ALT), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Aboriginal Apprenticeship Programs, Heta Inc, South Australia Works Working Regions, DFEEST, MADEC Employment and Training and Mission Australia. Heta's Indigenous Employment Program is funded by the Australian Government.

There are people out there who do care...(23/01/2012)

A couple of days before we broke up for Christmas, Kerwin’s (Heta Trainer) neighbour’s house burnt and was badly damaged. The young family were not injured badly but lost a lot. A small group of us at Heta Thebarton site quickly put together a box of donations including money, toys, essentials etc. There was not much time as we were all finishing work the next day. Below is an email from Kerwin thanking Heta for our kindness – bought a tear to my eye so wanted to share the love. Nice one Heta!!!!!!!!!!!

"I have been asked to pass on a very Big Thankyou to all that donated gifts/ money etc, to the family that had lost everything in a fire that happened at their home just before Christmas. I have been in contact with the family about two days ago due to them having to clean up the property and they had asked me to do this for them. I must say that on the day that I dropped the gifts etc off, both her and her husband burst into tears and could not say a word. She also said that there are people out there that do care, and I replied “Yes there is and there always will be”. I would also like to take this opportunity to say thanks to all concerned. kia ora (thankyou). Kerwin."

If you would like to provide your support to the family please contact Kerwin on 08 8212 7771.
