Community Partnership Maximises Training Benefits

Heta participants working towards Certificate II in Horticulture20 Heta participants are currently involved in buiilding the region’s first Dog Park at the Blakes Crossing development in Blakeview as part of Heta skills training program. The program involves 20 participants building the park all the while learning valuable skills to attain a Certificate II in Horticulture. Participants learn a diverse range of skills in the building and construction of fences, a shelter shed, bridge, stairs, irrigation and landscaping.  This program is designed to maximise training and employment opportunities for participants, and overall community benefit.
Having local disadvantaged people involved in a community project like this has many advantages. It gives the participants ownership of a local project, “real” work experience with companies and contractors, and provides incentive and motivation to move forward in life. Their attendance and achievements to date have been fantastic.

Lend Lease, Heta, City of Playford, Bendigo Bank and the Government of South Australia (DFEEST & Northern Futures) have joined forces to deliver this project. All of the organisations involved acknowledge the importance of employing local people, developing relationships with schools to improve school to work transition, and collaborating in the development of local pre-employment programs.

There are people out there who do care...(23/01/2012)

A couple of days before we broke up for Christmas, Kerwin’s (Heta Trainer) neighbour’s house burnt and was badly damaged. The young family were not injured badly but lost a lot. A small group of us at Heta Thebarton site quickly put together a box of donations including money, toys, essentials etc. There was not much time as we were all finishing work the next day. Below is an email from Kerwin thanking Heta for our kindness – bought a tear to my eye so wanted to share the love. Nice one Heta!!!!!!!!!!!

"I have been asked to pass on a very Big Thankyou to all that donated gifts/ money etc, to the family that had lost everything in a fire that happened at their home just before Christmas. I have been in contact with the family about two days ago due to them having to clean up the property and they had asked me to do this for them. I must say that on the day that I dropped the gifts etc off, both her and her husband burst into tears and could not say a word. She also said that there are people out there that do care, and I replied “Yes there is and there always will be”. I would also like to take this opportunity to say thanks to all concerned. kia ora (thankyou). Kerwin."

If you would like to provide your support to the family please contact Kerwin on 08 8212 7771.
